Details

In 1975 Chicago, a young Michelle Darnell returns to the orphanage from which she was adopted. He bounces between orphanages and other homes for 5-10 years until his grief turns to anger and he realizes that he will succeed on his own.

Today, Michelle is the CEO of three Fortune 500 companies, a guru and best-selling author of self-help books, and the 47th richest woman in the United States. After a successful event at the United Center, Michelle and her nemesis/girlfriend Renault basically confront Michelle about a recent stock deal in which she acquired the stock due to insider trading, and is turned into the SEC by Renault as retaliation. After a disastrous interview with Gayle King, Michel is arrested for insider trading and sent to prison for five months, while his companies are taken over by Renault and all his assets are seized and frozen by the government. When released, Michel finds his home haunted and seeks out his former assistant Claire and her daughter Rachel with whom he lives until he gets back on his feet.

After Michelle fails to get back on her feet with colleagues she insults, she is soon inspired by Rachel’s Dandelion Scout cookies and the organization profits a year. Furthermore, Michelle decides to start her own company, Darnell’s Darlings, selling Claire’s homemade brownies and brings Claire in as a partner. Recruiting girls from Dandelion and other students, the girls succeed in selling brownies, even causing trouble with Dandelion which leads to a street fight between the two. Michelle, Rachel and Claire soon grow closer together; Michelle in particular inspires Claire to quit her job and go on a date with Mike, a co-worker, while growing closer to Rachel as the company grows.

Michel, bringing his former mentor Ida Marquet as an investor in the company, is horrified at a celebratory dinner when he receives a handmade gift from Rachel who declares the three a family due to her own personal background of abandonment. Michel, overwhelmed, soon begins to be absent from Rachel and Claire’s lives, especially when he starts making big business decisions without Claire’s involvement, and the two clash heads after Michel mistakenly believes that Claire has sold the company to Renault. In return, Michel sold the company to Renault. Michel soon returns to Rachel and Claire, feeling remorseful and apologetic, explaining his childhood where he was often abandoned. Michel decides to help Claire get her company back by stealing the contract from Renault’s office. Mike, now Claire’s boyfriend, decides to help.

While Mike distracts the doormen, the two women successfully steal the deal but are interrupted by Renault who fights with Michelle, leading to the rooftop where Michelle seemingly pushes herself off the roof to her death (but falls to the lower level). Claire also pushes the Renault. Michel and Renault, having been romantically involved, make peace with each other.

A year later, the business was a huge success and Claire and Rachel used the money to buy a new family home.
