Details

After Superman’s death, [b] intelligence officer Amanda Waller convinces the US government to greenlight Task Force X, a reactionary team of criminals and supervillains. The team will be used to combat metahuman threats under Waller’s control via nanite bombs attached to each criminal’s neck, which can be detonated remotely if they attempt to rebel or escape. If successful, their sentence will be reduced.

Dr. June Moon, an American archaeologist, is possessed by a witch named Enchantress. Waller can control the wizard by capturing his magical heart, which injures him when struck. Waller’s subordinate, Colonel Rick Flagg, falls in love with Moon, and is assigned to Task Force X. However, the Enchantress betrays Waller, conquers Midway City, transforms humans into monsters, and summons her brother Incubus to destroy mankind.

Task Force X is formed to stop the Enchantress, using six inmates from Belle Reve Penitentiary. The roster consists of hitman Deadshot, who wants to be reunited with his daughter Zoe; Harley Quinn, a former psychiatrist turned girlfriend of Gotham crime lord Joker; Australian thief Captain Boomerang; pyrokinetic ex-gangster El Diablo; the mutant cannibal Killer Croc; and rope-climber mercenary Slipknot. The group is led by Flag and joined by his partner Katana, a Japanese swordsman. Waller and Flag deliberately conceal the latter’s relationship with Moon.

Upon reaching Midway City, the team’s helicopter is shot down, forcing them to leave on foot. Boomerang convinces Slipknot to take off, claiming the bombs are a ruse, but Flag tries to escape, activating the bombs and killing Slipknot; Satisfies Boomerang’s curiosity about the bomb’s legitimacy. Scaling a skyscraper and fighting through waves of heavily mutated soldiers under Enchantress’ control, the team discovers that the target of the mission was Waller himself, trying to cover up his involvement in Enchantress’ attack.

As Waller and the squad await the helicopter extraction, they are attacked by the Joker, who has learned of Harley’s predicament. In the laboratory with technology stolen from an A.R.G.U.S., Joker defuses Harley’s bomb and helps her escape. Waller shoots down the Joker’s helicopter, though Harley survives and joins the squad, believing the Joker to be dead. The wizard captures Waller to retrieve his heart. Deadshot finds Waller’s secret files and discovers Flag’s connection to Moon. The group abandons the flag, sharing a drink in an abandoned bar, where El Diablo reveals his powers and criminal lifestyle leading to the death of his family. Flag relieves the squad of their mission, but realizing they have a chance to prove themselves, the team sets out to save the city.

The squad attacks Enchantress, while Killer Croc and Flag Platoon of Navy SEALs plant a bomb under the subway to kill Incubus. El Diablo embraces his pyrokinesis, sacrificing himself to the trick and placing the incubus in its proper place. The Enchantress invites the squad to join her and Harley pretends to be seduced to get close enough to cut out the Enchantress’ heart. Flag crushes his heart, killing him and freeing Moon. Waller cuts ten years from each squad member’s sentence and grants their requests (except Boomerang, who is detained instead). The Joker, who is still alive, breaks into Belle Reve and rescues Harley.

In a mid-credits scene, Waller meets Bruce Wayne, who agrees to protect him from the legal consequences of events in Midway City in exchange for government files on the growing metahuman community. He reveals his plan to contact the heroes of The Flash, including the Flash and Aquaman, to form his own superhero team. In response, he tells Waller to shut down Task Force X or he and his “friends” will do it for him.

Cast and characters

Will Smith as Floyd Lawton / Deadshot:
An expert marksman and assassin. A mercenary by day and a concerned father by night, Deadshot is a conflicted criminal who enjoys hunting but still tries to do right by his young daughter. Smith was offered simultaneous appearances in Suicide Squad and Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to Independence Day in which she starred. Smith chose to portray Deadshot, stating that the choice was “nothing about the merits of the movie—but a choice to try. Going forward versus grasping and clawing back.”
Jared Leto as Joker:
A psychopathic crime boss and Batman’s nemesis. Leto described his role as “almost Shakespearean” and “a beautiful subversion of a character”; About playing the villain, he said, “I took a deep dive. But it was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way. It was fun to play these psychological games. But at the same time, it was very painful.” Leto never broke character during filming, as Smith went as far as saying he never met her. To prepare for the role, Leto spent his time alone, listening to 1920s gospel music – commenting that he felt “the Joker might be a lot older than people think” – and reading literature on shamanism. Influences on the character’s appearance include the work of Alejandro Jodorowsky. The Joker’s tattoo was added by Ayer, who believed it gave the character a modern gangster look. David Bowie has also cited Leto as an influence on the character.
Margot Robbie as Dr. Harley Quinn:
A former psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum is seduced by the Joker and becomes his insane partner-in-crime. Producer Richard Suckle described the character as, “A fan favorite. Funny, crazy, scary. … You can’t come up with enough adjectives to describe all the different things you see him do.” Robbie described Quinn. One of the most manipulative members of the squad and described her relationship with the Joker as “incredibly dysfunctional”, adding that Quinn is, “crazy about him—like, literally, crazy. He’s crazy. But she loves him. And it’s a really unhealthy, dysfunctional relationship.” . but an addiction.”
Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag:
Vir, the military leader of Task Force X. A West Point graduate and Green Beret colonel who leads suicide squads in the field. Tom Hardy was previously cast in the role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
Viola Davis as Amanda Waller:
Government officer who commands the squad. Ambitious and misguided, he has big plans and is willing to let any metahuman or military protocol stand in his way. Davis said she was fascinated by the character, singled out her psychology and strength, and described her as a “strong black woman, tough, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will”. her villain” and noted that her powers are “her intelligence and her complete lack of guilt.”
Jai Courtney as Digger Harkness / Captain Boomerang:
Of his role, a thief who wields a deadly boomerang, Courtney said, “He’s an absolute bogan, in the purest sense. David Ayer’s first order was, ‘Find your inner dirtbag’.”
Jay Hernandez as Chato Santana / El Diablo:
A former Los Angeles gang member who has supernatural powers that allow him to summon flames and transform himself into a monstrous fire entity. He expended his fire-fighting powers in solitary flames as penance for the horrors he had inflicted on those he loved. Hernandez sets his character apart from his teammates because he “just wants to stay out of the fight,” while “most [squad members] are happy to go out there and kill people.”
Adewale Akinnuye-Agbaje as Waylon Jones / Killer Croc:
A cannibalistic metahuman criminal who suffers from a regressive atavism that has caused him to develop reptilian traits. Being a meta-human, he has superhuman strength, high endurance, and the ability to breathe underwater. His skin allows him to withstand high-powered weapons and skin friction. Akinnuoye-Agbaje described the character as “a cannibal with anger issues”.
Ike Barinholtz as Captain Hunter Griggs:
An officer at the special security barracks in Belle Reve, the black site where the government incarcerated the squad.
Scott Eastwood as “GQ” Edwards:
A Navy SEAL lieutenant who assists the flag during the squad’s mission. After working with actor Shia LaBeouf in Fury, Ayer originally approached him for the role, but the studio was not interested in the actor.
Adam Beach as Christopher Weiss / Slipknot:
A man who can climb anything.
Karen Fukuhara as Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana:
A volunteer hero member of Task Force X, who serves as Rick Flagg’s bodyguard. She is a widowed expert martial artist and swordsman. Since he is not a criminal, he does not have a micro-bomb implant. Fukuhara states that the katana “has morals and codes. He can slice through hundreds of people without taking a breath.”
Cara Delevingne as Dr. June Moon / Enchanted:
An archeologist who is possessed by an ancient evil force that transforms him into a powerful sorcerer’s host when summoned. Released after a long period of imprisonment, the entity attracts Waller’s attention. Delevingne described Moon as “an adventure-seeker who always wanted some excitement” and Enchantress as “a wild animal”. Box Office

Suicide Squad was a box office success, grossing $325.1 million in the United States and Canada and $421.7 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $746.8 million, against a production budget of $175 million ($325 million including advertising and promotion costs). Despite early negative reviews and the less-than-expected box office performance of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March, Suicide Squad was highly anticipated by audiences worldwide. It recorded a worldwide opening of $267.1 million from 59 countries and an IMAX worldwide debut of $18.2 million, both setting new records for the month of August. It was the second-best worldwide debut for a DC property behind Dawn of Justice ($422.5 million) and the seventh-best for a superhero title. The Hollywood Reporter highlighted that Dawn of Justice had the benefit of a coveted day-date release with China, while Suicide Squad did not secure a release date in the country. Forbes noted that if the film were released in China, it would likely match or top Guardians of the Galaxy’s $773 million gross and Deadpool’s $782 million gross. Deadline Hollywood calculated the film’s net profit to be $158.45 million, making it the 10th-highest-grossing release of 2016 when combining all costs and revenues for the film.
