Details

A version of America Chavez and Stephen Strange is chased by a demon in space between universes while searching for the Book of Peace. Strange is killed and Chavez accidentally creates a portal that transports himself and Strange’s body to Earth-616, [a] where Stephen Strange’s version of the universe rescues Chavez from another demon[b] with the help of Sorcerer Supreme Wang. Chavez explains that the creatures are hunting him because he has the ability to travel through the multiverse.
Recognizing the witch’s run on Satan, Strange consults Wanda Maximoff but realizes she is responsible for the attack. After gaining the Darkhold and becoming the Scarlet Witch, Wanda believes that taking Chavez’s powers and traveling through the multiverse will allow her to reunite with Billy and Tommy, the children she created during her time at Westview. , Wanda attacks Kamar-Taj and kills many magicians. Chavez accidentally transported himself and Strange to Earth-838. Wanda uses the Darkhold to “Dreamwalk”, taking control of her Earth-838 counterpart who lives her own suburban life with Billy and Tommy. After a living mage sacrifices himself to destroy the Darkhold and destroy the Path of Dreams, an enraged Wanda forces Wong to take him to Mount Undagore, the source of the Darkhold’s power, to reestablish the Path of Dreams.
While searching for help, Strange and Chavez are captured by Earth-838’s Sorcerer Supreme, Karl Mordo, and brought before the Illuminati, a group consisting of Mordo, Peggy Carter, Blackgar Boltagon, Maria Rambeau, Reed Richards, and Charles Xavier. They explain that through the reckless use of the Darkhold in their universe in an attempt to defeat Thanos, the Stranges of Earth-838 have launched a universe-destroying “invasion”. After defeating Thanos, the Illuminati execute Strange to prevent him from further harm. Mordo believes that Earth-616’s Strange is just as dangerous, but Wanda resets her Dreamwalk to Mount Undagore and reaches the body of her Earth-838 counterpart before the Illuminati can pass judgment. He brutally kills all the Illuminati except Mordo, whom Strange subdues before escaping with Chavez. The two escape with the help of Strange’s ex-fiancée Christine Palmer, an Earth-838 version of a scientist working with the Illuminati.
Strange, Chavez and Palmer enter the space between universes to find the Book of Tranquility, which opposes the Darkhold, but Wanda appears and destroys it. He then takes over Chavez’s mind and uses his powers to send Strange and Palmer into an intrusion-destroying universe. Strange defeats the destroyed universe’s Strange, who has been corrupted by his Darkhold, and then uses that Darkhold to dreamwalk into the body of his dead opponent on Earth-616. With Wong’s help, Strange saves Chavez from Wanda and encourages Chavez to use his powers. Chavez takes Wanda to Earth-838, where she sees Billy and Tommy running away from her in fear while crying for their real mother. Realizing the error of her ways, Wanda abandons and uses her powers to bring down Mount Undagore, simultaneously destroying all copies of the Darkhold throughout the multiverse and sacrificing herself in the process. Chavez returns Strange and Palmer to their respective universes.
After some time, the Kamar-Taz is repaired and the surviving wizards continue training, joining Chavez. Using the Darkhold causes Strange to develop a third eye and dreamwalk in a corpse. In a mid-credits scene, Strange is approached by a sorcerer [D] warning him that his actions have triggered an intrusion that he must help fix. Strange follows him into the Dark Dimension.

Cast and characters

Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange:
A neurosurgeon who became a master of the mystic arts after a career-ending car accident. Writer Michael Waldron said that Strange was “at the height of his powers” in the film and compared the character to Indiana Jones as a hero who “can take a punch”, but with the intelligence of chef Anthony Bourdain. He saw Strange as a “great adventure hero you just love to see kick ass”. Director Sam Raimi explained that Strange begins the film believing that he should make all the decisions and that he must learn to “let go” and trust others. Cumberbatch also portrayed three alternate versions of the character: the Earth-617 version who dies at the beginning of the film and wears a costume inspired by Matt Fraction’s 2011 Defenders comic book series; Former Sorcerer Supreme of Earth-838 who founded the Illuminati; and a version that has been corrupted by the Darkhold.
Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch:
A former Avenger turned rogue who can use chaos magic, telepathy and telekinesis, and alter reality. The film continues Wonder’s “ownership of what makes her unique and accountability to her life experiences” that began in the WandaVision (2021) series, using an accent that is more true to her Sokovian heritage than some of the earlier MCU films. . He uses a more Americanized accent. Olsen wanted to ensure that Wanda’s role in the film honored the events of the series, which prompted some adjustments to the film to ensure that the character evolved rather than repeating moments from Wandavision. He felt that the portrayal of the film showed a newfound confidence for the character which was “really empowering” and said that “it’s okay to play a lot of characters that people are disappointed with sometimes”. Olsen also portrayed the Earth-838 counterpart of the character.
Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo:
Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme-838 and a member of the Illuminati. He is an alternate version of Mordo seen in the first film, which sets him up as a future antagonist. That version does not appear in the sequel because he does not fit the story, with Waldron explaining that they focused on the Earth-838 version of the character and felt that it was “more exciting to leave the Earth-616 version for another day.” An early version of the script included Mordor. The Earth-616 version included an opening sequence where he would be killed by Wanda.
Benedict Wong as Wong:
Mentor and friend of Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme-616 and Strange. The actor was happy to hear that his character will be the Sorcerer Supreme and stand “toe to toe with Doctor Strange”, acting as the voice of reason for Strange who will ultimately face the consequences for ignoring Wang’s advice. The actor had more action scenes in the film and was prepared by training with former rugby league player Shannon Hegarty.
Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez:
A teenager who has the ability to travel between dimensions by punching open doors. He originates from another universe known as the Utopian Parallel. Despite playing a younger version of the character compared to the one seen in the comics, Gomez wanted to stay faithful to the source material and said her journey into the film began with the character being alone for a long time and “running away from her individuality”. . Chavez must accept his powers and learn to trust others by the end of the film. Marvel Studios was looking for the right film to introduce the character before settling on the Multiverse of Madness.
Michael Stahlberg as Nicodemus West:
A surgeon and former colleague of Strange. Stuhlbarg was planned to portray his Earth-838 counterpart but was only able to film one scene (as the original version) due to scheduling conflicts. The Earth-838 version worked for the Illuminati, in Jurassic Park (1993) by Samuel L. The heroes find his head in an elevator after Wanda is killed off-screen, similar to the death of Jackson’s Ray Arnold.
Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer:
An emergency surgeon who was Strange’s colleague and lover. The film explores Strange’s decision at the end of Doctor Strange (2016) to protect the New York sactum and not be with Palmer, despite still having feelings for her and possibly regretting that decision, [38] Palmer married someone else in the film. McAdams also portrays the character’s Earth-838 counterpart, an employee of the Baxter Foundation and Strange’s former lover from that reality. McAdams described this version of the character as a “multiversal expert” who allowed him more action scenes than in the first film. Due to the Earth-838 version of Strange being destroyed, he has “a lot more baggage” than the original version of the character.
The Illuminati of Earth-838 features Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, portraying a different version of the character he previously played in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men film series; Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter / Captain Carter, after voicing another version of the animated series…? (2021); Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau / Captain Marvel, an alternate version of her character from Captain Marvel (2019); Anson Mount as Blackgar Boltagon / Black Bolt, an alternate version of his role from Marvel’s ABC television series Inhumans (2017); and John Krasinski as Reed Richards, a member of the Fantastic Four.
Julian Hilliard and Jett Cline portray the Earth-838 versions of Wanda’s sons Billy and Tommy, reprising their respective roles from Wandavision, while Topo Resniviro reprises his role as Hamir, a Master of the Mystic Arts, from the first film. The film also stars Sheila Atim as Sara, a Master of the Mystic Arts, and Adam Hugil as the voice of Rintrah, a minotaur-like figure of R’Val who is a student of Kamar-Taz. Ross Marquand voices the Ultron drone that appears on Earth-838. Markund formerly What if…? A voiced a different version of Ultron, replacing James Spader who portrayed Earth-616 Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). The character Claire is introduced in the mid-credits scene, portrayed by Charlize Theron, and makes a cameo appearance as a guest at Waldron Palmer’s wedding. Bruce Campbell, a frequent collaborator with Raimi, appears briefly in both the main film and post-credits scenes as a vendor at an Earth-838 food stall called Pizza Poppa.
