Black Panther is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 18th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Ryan Coogler, who wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole, and stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther alongside Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya. , Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. In Black Panther, T’Challa is crowned king of Wakanda after his father’s death, but is challenged by Killmonger (Jordan), who plans to abandon the country’s isolationist policies and start a world revolution.

Wesley Snipes planned to make a Black Panther film in 1992, but the project did not come to fruition. In September 2005, Marvel Studios listed a Black Panther film as one of ten films based on Marvel characters intended to be distributed by Paramount Pictures. Mark Bailey was hired to write a script in January 2011. Black Panther was officially announced in October 2014 and Boseman made his debut as Captain America: Civil War (2016). Cole and Coogler joined by then, with additional casting in May. Black Panther was the first Marvel Studios film with a black director and a predominantly black cast. Principal photography took place from January to April 2017 at EUE/Screen Gems Studios in the Atlanta metropolitan area and in Busan, South Korea.
Black Panther premiered at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on January 29, 2018, and was released theatrically in the United States on February 16 as part of Phase III of the MCU. Critics praised its direction, writing, acting (especially by Boseman, Jordan, and Wright), costume design, production values, and soundtrack, but some criticized the visual effects. Many critics consider the film to be one of the best of the MCU, and it has also been noted for its cultural significance. The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named Black Panther one of the ten best films of 2018. It grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and broke numerous box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film directed by a black filmmaker, the ninth-highest-grossing film on release, the third-highest-grossing film in the United States and Canada, and the second-highest-grossing film of 2018. Release Date
Black Panther was nominated for seven awards at the 91st Academy Awards, winning three and receiving many other accolades. It was the first superhero film to receive a Best Picture nomination and the first MCU film to win in multiple categories. A sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was released on November 11, 2022, while a television series set in Wakanda is being developed for Disney+.

Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther:
The king of the African country of Wakanda who gains superhuman strength by eating a heart-shaped herb. He ascended the throne after the death of his father T’Chaka in Captain America: Civil War (2016). Boseman called T’Challa an anti-hero who is “very aware” of his responsibilities as the leader of Wakanda. Black Panther’s suit, which forms around his body, was inspired by a similar design by artist Brian Stelfridge in Ta-Nehisi Coates’ comic book series Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet. For his Wakandan accent, Boseman worked with the same dialect coach for Message from the King (2016) and Mares Crump to stay in shape between Civil War and Black Panther. Boseman visited South Africa twice to prepare for the role; examines Shaka Zulu, Patrice Lumumba, Nelson Mandela speeches, and Fela Kuti songs; A Yoruba spoke to Babalawo; Trained in Dumbe, Capoeira Angola and Zulu stick fighting; and took a DNA test to better understand his African ancestry. He signed a five-film deal with Marvel at the start of Civil War. Ashton Tyler plays a young T’Challa.

Additionally, Florence Kasumba and John Kani in Captain America: Civil War; Kani’s son Atandwa Kani portrays a young T’Chaka. Wakandan veterans in the film include Isaac De Bankole for the River Tribe, Connie Chiume for the Mining Tribe, Dorothy Steele for the Merchant Tribe, and Danny Sapani for the Border Tribe. Seidel Noel appears as Joliswa, a member of the Dora Milaj. Marija Abney, Genecia Adams-Guinard, Maria Hippolyte, Marie Maurum, Janelle Stevens, Zola Williams, Christine Hollingsworth, and Shaunette Renee Wilson also star as Doras. Nabiah initially announced that she was playing criminal Tilda Johnson, but her character was named Linda in the final film due to Gabriel Dennis playing Johnson in Luke Cage’s second season. Comedian Trevor Noah voices Griot, a Wakandan ship A.I., Black Panther co-creator Stan Lee makes a cameo as a patron at a South Korean casino, and Sebastian Stan makes a surprise appearance reprising his role as Bucky Barnes in a post-credits scene, now named White Wolf is kept.
Box Office
Black Panther grossed $700.4 million in the United States and Canada and $681.8 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $1.382 billion. It became the highest-grossing single superhero film, the third-highest-grossing MCU and superhero film overall, the ninth-highest-grossing film of all time, and the highest-grossing film by an African-American director. It is the fifth MCU film and 33rd overall to surpass $1 billion, and the second-highest-grossing film of 2018. Deadline Hollywood calculated the film’s net profit at $476.8 million, accounting for production budget, marketing, talent engagement and other costs; Box office revenue and home media revenue placed it second on the list of “Most Valuable Blockbusters” of 2018.
