Thor: Love and Thunder is a 2022 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Taika Waititi, who wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Keiten Robinson, and stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor alongside Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jamie Alexander, Waititi, Russell Crowe and Natalie Portman. In the film, Thor tries to find inner peace, but must return to action and recruit Valkyrie (Thompson), Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster (Portman) — who is now the mighty Thor — to stop Gor the God Butcher (Bell). ) from eliminating all the gods.
Hemsworth and Waititi discussed plans for a Ragnarok sequel by January 2018. Love and Thunder was announced in July 2019, with Hemsworth, Waititi and Thompson all returning, as well as Portman who did not appear in Ragnarok. Waititi wanted to separate Love and Thunder from Ragnarok, creating a romance film and 1980s-inspired adventure. He adapted elements of Jason Aaron’s run in the 2010s Thor comic books, which similarly debuted Gor and saw Foster take on Thor’s mantle and powers while undergoing cancer treatment. In February 2020, Robinson joined to contribute to the script, and further casting was announced later that year, including an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy. Production was expected to begin in late 2020 but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming finally began in January 2021 in Sydney, Australia with Barry Idoin as director of photography and finished in early June.
Thor: Love and Thunder premiered at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood on June 23, 2022, in Los Angeles and was released in the United States on July 8 as part of the MCU’s fourth season. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the film for its light-heartedness, action sequences, and performances by Hemsworth, Bale, and Portman, but criticized the screenplay and tonal inconsistencies; Although its humor and visual impact were met with polarized reactions,[6] many critics considered the film inferior to Ragnarok. Love and Thunder grossed $760.9 million worldwide, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2022.

Details

Gor and his daughter, Prem, struggle in a barren desert, the last of their race. Despite praying to their god, Rapu, love dies. The god-slayer Necrosword summons Gore, taking him to the lush grounds of Rapu. After Rapu cruelly mocks and dismisses Gare’s plight, he abandons the deity, causing Rapu to strangle him. The Necrosword offers itself to Gor, who kills Rapu with it and vows to kill all gods. Gor is given the power to manipulate shadows and create monsters but is cursed with imminent death and corruption under the influence of the sword. After Gor kills several gods, Thor, who has joined the Guardians of the Galaxy after the Avengers’ battle against Thanos, [a] receives a distress signal from Sif. He splits up with the group and finds an injured Sif, who warns that Gor’s next target is New Asgard. Meanwhile, Dr. Jane Foster, Thor’s ex-girlfriend, is diagnosed with stage four terminal cancer. As the treatment proved ineffective, he traveled to New Asgard in the hope that Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, which had previously been broken by Hela, [b] could heal him.

Due to an enchantment that Thor unknowingly placed on it years ago to protect Foster, Mjolnir regenerates and binds himself to it. Thor arrives in New Asgard as Gor’s attack begins. Thor is surprised to see Foster wielding Mjolnir, but with him, Valkyrie and Korg fight Gor. The group thwarts Gore, but he escapes, kidnapping several Asgardian children and imprisoning them in the Shadow Realm. The group travels to the almighty city to warn the other gods and ask for their help in building an army. The leader of the gods, Zeus, unwilling to help, thought they could stay safe and hide from the city’s den; He also believes that Gor will not be able to achieve his stated goal of going to the realm of eternity, where he will be granted one wish, presumably to destroy all the gods. As a security precaution, Zeus orders the capture of the group so that they do not reveal the location of the city to Gor. When Zeus injures Korg, Thor impales Zeus with his thunderbolt, which Valkyrie steals before fleeing to confront Gor in the Shadow Realm. Along the way, Thor learns of Foster’s cancer diagnosis.
The team reaches the Shadow Realm but is unable to locate the children. Foster sees ancient drawings depicting Thor’s battle-axe Stormbreaker as a means of summoning Bifrost to enter eternity, and anticipates the trap laid by Gore. He throws the stormbreaker to prevent Gor from accessing it. However, Gor overpowers the group and threatens to kill Foster, forcing Thor to summon him again. Gor successfully steals Stormbreaker and injures Valkyrie before collapsing the weakened Foster.
After returning to New Asgard, Thor discovers that Foster’s Thor form is not allowing his body to fight the cancer naturally. Because of this, Thor travels alone to the Eternal Altar and uses Zeus’s thunderbolt, imbuing the children with its power to fight the monsters of the pit while fighting the pit. When Foster realizes that Gor is about to kill Thor, he joins Mjolnir in battle to save him. They destroy the Necrosword, freeing Gor from its effects, but the three are brought to the Realm of Eternity. As Gor prepares to grant his wish, Thor pleads with Gor to revive his daughter rather than destroy the gods. Thor then leaves Gor to make his decision and goes to Foster, who succumbs to his illness and dies in his arms. Moved by their display, Gor wishes for eternity to rekindle love, which he grants. As Gor dies from the curse, he begs Thor to take care of Prem.
Later, the children return to New Asgard, where Valkyrie and Sif begin their training and a monument is erected in Foster’s honor. Thor accepts Prem, who joins him in his heroics, the former Mjolnir and the latter Stormbreaker.
In a mid-credits scene, in the City of Omnipotence, a healthy Zeus sends his son Hercules to kill Thor. In a post-credits scene, Foster arrives at the gates of Valhalla, where Heimdall greets him.

Cast and characters

Chris Hemsworth as Thor:
An Avenger and former king of Asgard, based on the Norse mythological god of the same name. Director Taika Waititi has said that Thor is going through a midlife crisis in the film, as he is “just trying to figure out his purpose, trying to figure out who he is and why he’s a hero or if he should be a hero”. [8] Hemsworth’s makeup artist Matteo Silvi applied the “RIP Loki” tattoo on Thor’s back, which can be redone but the design remains unchanged. His twin sons Sasha and Tristan portray Thor as children.
Christian Bale as Gor the God Butcher:
A scarred wielder of the Necrosword and a shadow manipulator who seeks the extinction of the gods.[11][12] Waititi describes Gore as “very powerful” and layered. Bell felt the character had a “slightly Nosferatu attitude” and drew inspiration from the music video for the Apex Twin song “Come to Daddy” (1997). Waititi chose to alter Gore’s facial features in the film because his original appearance in the comics is similar to Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter film series. Odd Studio created Gore’s practical makeup.
Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie:
The king of New Asgard, based on the mythological entity Brynhildr.[11][7] Thompson and producer Kevin Feige stated that the character’s bisexuality would be addressed in the film. YTT said Valkyrie had to adjust to the bureaucratic aspects of governance, away from the battlefield, such as dealing with New Asgard’s infrastructure and economy and hosting representatives from other nations.
Jamie Alexander as Sif: An Asgardian warrior and childhood friend of Thor, based on the Norse mythological god of the same name.
Taika Waititi as Korg: A Kronan gladiator who befriended Thor. Waititi also voices Nini, the Cronan god of Noni.

King of the Olympians, based on the Greek mythological god of the same name. Crowe wanted to play the role with a Greek accent, but Waititi thought it would sound “too silly”, so he cast Crowe in both a Greek and a British accent, [22] Waititi suggesting the British accent be the same. Crow Gladiator (2000) is used for Maximus Decimus Meridius. Waititi eventually concluded that Crowe was correct and used the Greek accent in the final film.
Natalie Portman as Jane Foster/Mighty Thor:
An astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-girlfriend who is undergoing treatment for cancer and who gains the power to become the mighty Thor by wielding a reconstructed Mjolnir, previously wielded by Thor.[11][7][24] Portman, who previously appeared in the film Thor: Ragnarok (2017). did not appear in, agreed to return after a meeting with Waititi,[25] who said that Foster’s return to Thor’s life after eight years would be a big adjustment for him because he is a different life without him. Waititi added that it would be a “real treat” for Foster to dress up as Thor. In preparation for her role, Portman took the Mjolnir prop home to practice using it for her stunts.
