Details

In the animated fairy tale kingdom of Andalusia, the corrupt and ruthless Queen Narissa plots to defend her claim to the throne, which she will lose if her stepson, Prince Edward, finds and marries her true love. He enlists his loyal servant Nathaniel to distract Edward from hunting trolls.

Giselle, a young woman, dreams of meeting a prince and experiencing a “happily ever after”. He, his chipmunk friend Pip, and the forest animals work together to create a homemade statue of his true love. Edward hears Giselle singing and sets out to find her. Nathaniel frees a captive troll to kill Giselle, but Edward rescues her. She and Edward are immediately attracted to each other and plan to marry the next day.

Disguised as an old hag, Narissa intercepts Giselle on her way to her wedding and pushes her into a well, where she is transformed into a live-action version of herself and transported to Times Square in New York City in the real world. The frightened gazelle quickly disappeared.

Meanwhile, Robert Philip, a divorce lawyer, plans to propose to his girlfriend Nancy. He and his young daughter Morgan encounter Gisele on their way home, and Robert reluctantly lets Gisele stay in their apartment at the insistence of Morgan, who believes she is a princess.

Pip and Edward embark on a rescue mission in the real world, where they too become live-action versions of themselves. Pip, now a real chipmunk, can no longer speak and communicates only by screeching. Narissa sends Nathaniel to follow and intercept Edward. Narissa gives Nathaniel three poisoned apples that will put anyone who eats them to sleep until the clock strikes twelve, after which they will die.

Meanwhile, after Giselle summons bugs and insects to clean Robert’s apartment, Nancy arrives to take Morgan to school. He meets Giselle and leaves, assuming that Robert is unfaithful. He is annoyed at first, but he spends the day with Giselle, knowing that she is weak in town. She questions Robert about his relationship with Nancy and helps the pair reconcile by sending her flowers and an invitation to a costume ball at the Woolworth Building.

Edward finds Giselle at Robert’s apartment. Although he is eager to take her to Andalusia and marry her, he suggests that they should go on a date first and get to know each other better. Giselle promises to return to Andalusia after the ball that night, where Robert and Nancy are also present. Narissa decides to enter the real world and kill Giselle after Nathaniel fails to poison her twice.

At the ball, Robert and Giselle dance romantically with each other. Giselle and Edward prepare to leave, but she feels depressed leaving Robert behind. Narissa appears as the old hag and offers Gisele the last poisoned apple, promising that it will erase her memory. He takes a bite and falls asleep with only minutes to live.

Narissa tries to escape with Giselle’s body but Edward stops her. Realizing that Narissa never cared for him, Nathaniel reveals his plot and apologizes for his previous actions. Robert realizes that true love’s kiss is the only power that can break the apple’s curse. Edward’s kiss fails to wake Giselle, so he and Nancy beg Robert to kiss her instead.

She wakes up when Robert kisses her. Enraged, Narissa transforms into a dragon and takes him hostage. Giselle chases Narissa to the top of the building to rescue Robert with Edward’s sword. Pip arrives to support Giselle and knocks Narissa to her death on the street below. Robert almost falls over, but Giselle rescues him, and they share another kiss on the roof.

A happy new life unfolds for all, with Edward and Nancy falling in love and getting married in Andalusia while Nathaniel, who lives in New York, and Pip, who returns to Andalusia, each write autobiographies based on their experiences in the real world. Gisele started a conventional fashion design business and then formed a happy family with Robert and Morgan in New York.

Cast And Characters

Amy Adams as Giselle: A singing and dancing princess who almost makes her dream of meeting her prince come true. Adams was announced as Gisele on November 14, 2005. Although the studio was looking for a film star in the role, director Kevin Lima insisted on casting a lesser-known actress. Among the 300 actresses who auditioned for the role, Adams stood out to Lima not only because she resembled a Disney princess but also because of her “commitment to the character, the ability to escape into the character without judging the character. Irresistible”. Hailing from Andalusia, Giselle displayed characteristics similar to early Disney princesses. by; Lima described her as “about 80% Snow White, with some features borrowed from Cinderella and Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty… though her toughness comes from Ariel from The Little Mermaid”. She is “eternal optimist and romantic” but “fiercely independent and true to her beliefs”. Over the course of the film, she becomes more mature (even stopping the habit of singing incessantly) but retains her passion, kindness, innocence and optimism for singing.
Patrick Dempsey as Robert Philip: A Manhattan divorce attorney at Churchill, Harline & Smith LLP who doesn’t believe in true love, happily-ever-after, or fairy tales since his wife left him and their daughter. He falls in love with Gisele after his adventures in New York City, and her sense of fun slowly rubs off on him over the course of the film. Lima cast Dempsey after Disney was satisfied with the casting of Adams but wanted a more well-known actor in the film. Dempsey, whose starring role in the TV series Grey’s Anatomy earned him the nickname “McDreamy”, was described by Lima as a “modern-day Prince Charming for today’s audiences”. The role was challenging for Dempsey as he had to play the role of the straight man against the more outrageous characters of Adams and Marsden.
James Marsden as Prince Edward: A dim-witted, yet brave, chivalrous and good-hearted, prince who is surprised upon entering the world of New York. Marsden was announced to have been cast on December 6, 2005. When Marsden was auditioning, the role of Robert was not cast but he decided to play Prince Edward because he was “funnier and he responded more to the role”. Edward is a prince of Andalusia and stepson of Queen Narissa. He is “very pure, very simple-minded and simple, but innocently narcissistic”.
Timothy Spall as Nathaniel: A servant of Queen Narissa, who is controlled by his infatuation with the queen and his own lack of self-esteem. He does Narissa’s bidding at first, but eventually realizes her true nature and rebels against her. He has a penchant for disguise.
Idina Menzel as Nancy Tremaine: A fashion designer and Robert’s girlfriend. Once Giselle falls in love with Robert, she falls for Edward and moves in with him. As the role did not require any singing, Menzel said in an interview that “it was a compliment to be asked to be hired for my acting talent alone”. She is named after Lady Tremaine, Cinderella’s stepmother.
Rachel Covey as Morgan Philip: Robert’s 6-year-old daughter. Although her father misunderstands her and tells her otherwise, she believes in fairy tales and believes that magic exists.
Susan Sarandon as Queen Narissa: Edward’s evil stepmother, a witch, and a megalomaniac who hates Gisele only to be prevented from retaining her power. Sarandon was drawn to the project before Lima became involved as director. Because Sarandon had relatively little on-screen time, her scenes only took two weeks to film. Narissa’s behavior, traits, abilities, and physical characteristics were inspired by classical Disney villains such as the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.
Gisele’s chipmunk friend Pip is voiced by Jeff Bennett in Andalusia, where he has no problem expressing himself through speech, while Enchanted director Kevin Lima voices Pip in the real world, where he must communicate through shouts and charades. Much of Pip’s personality is based on Disney sidekicks such as Mushu from Mulan and Timon from The Lion King. The cast of Andalusia includes Lima’s daughter Emma Rose Lima as Bluebird and Fan, Tila Dunn as a rabbit and Fred Tatasio as the troll. Julie Andrews narrated the film.
Paige O’Hara and Judy Kuhn make cameo appearances as the soap opera character Angela and a pregnant woman facing Edward, respectively. Jon Rothman and Jody Benson are, respectively, Robert’s boss Carl and secretary Sam, while Tonya Pinkins and Isiah Whitlock Jr. portray Phoebe and Ethan Banks, a couple whose divorce Robert is mediating. Marlon Saunders and John McLaughlin appear as vocalists who sing “That’s How You Know” and “So Close” respectively.
