G.I. Joe: Retaliation is a 2013 American military science fiction action film based on the G.I. Joe toy line. This is the second installment in the G.I. Joe film series and the G.I. sequel Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009). Directed by John M. Chu and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the film stars Lee Byung-hoon, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Channing Tatum and Arnold Vosloo reprising their roles from the previous film, while Luke Braceys and Robert Baker reprise their roles as Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Substitute Cobra takes on the role of Commander, and DJ Cotrona, Adrian Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson round out the main cast. In the film, Heavy Machine Gunner Roadblock (Johnson), surviving G.I. Jose, his intelligence and infantry specialist Duke (Tatum) take revenge on Cobra for the deaths of their comrades, after an incident involving a Pakistani nuclear warhead in which Jose turns traitor.

Originally scheduled for release in June 2012, the film was delayed to convert to 3D and increase interest in the international market. G.I. Joe: Retaliation was released in the United States on March 28, 2013 by Paramount Pictures. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, although it was considered an improvement over its predecessor and grossed $375.7 million worldwide against a budget of $130–155 million.

Details

Intelligence and infantry specialist Duke led the G.I. Joe teams up in the Korean Demilitarized Zone to track down a North Korean defector. After the death of Pakistan’s president during the civil war, they are tasked with another mission to steal a nuclear warhead from Pakistan. Considering them traitors for causing an international incident, Zartan, still impersonating the President of the United States, calls in an airstrike that kills Duke and the other Joes. Heavy machine gunner Roadblock, sniper Flint and covert operator Lady Jay survive the attack by diving into a well and they return to the United States to contact General Joseph Colton, who supplies them with weapons.

Meanwhile, Storm Shadow, who survived the destruction of the Arctic base, [a] and demolitions expert Firefly rescue Cobra Commander from an underground maximum-security prison in Germany, leaving Destro behind. Storm Shadow is injured and retreats to a temple in the Himalayas to recover. The Blind Master, leader of the Arashikage clan, sends Snake Eyes and his apprentice Jinx to capture Storm Shadow, allowing him to answer for the murder of his uncle, the Hard Master.

After Zartan announced that Cobra would be the main US special forces team replacing the G.I. Jo notices a change in his speech pattern as Lady Jay assumes someone is impersonating the President. At a presidential fundraiser, he steals a sample of the president’s DNA, confirming that he is Zartan. They escape after clashing with Firefly and Xander, the head of the US Secret Service’s Presidential Detail and a member of Cobra.

After a battle with some ninjas loyal to Snake Eyes and Jinx Storm Shadow locates and captures Storm Shadow and takes him back to Tokyo, where Storm Shadow declares that he did not kill Hard Master and fights Snake Eyes with the weapon that killed him. proves it by Hard Master, which breaks because it is not Arshikage steel. Blind Master deduces that Zartan is the one who murdered Hard Master and creates Storm Shadow for it, who joins in taking down Cobra from the inside. Innocent, along with Storm Shadow Snake Eyes and Jinx, his cousin, as they join Jose’s efforts to stop Cobra and avenge the Hard Master.

Zartan invites world leaders to a summit at Fort Sumter, where he blackmails them into decommissioning their nuclear arsenals and reveals that he has developed Project Zeus: seven orbital kinetic bombardment weapons of mass destruction under his command. To prove his superiority, he destroys central London and activates the remaining weapons, offering to disarm them if the nations submit to Cobra. Storm Shadow betrays Cobra Commander and starts a fight, revealing Cobra’s deception to the world leaders. Colton kills Xander and rescues the real President with Lady Jay, while Storm Shadow kills Zartan. While fighting Snake Eyes, Jinx, and Flint Cobra’s troops, Cobra Commander orders Firefly to protect the launch device and escape in a helicopter. Roadblock overpowers the Firefly and destroys the orbital weapons. After taking revenge on the uncle, the storm shadow is gone.

At the White House ceremony, the actual president addressed the nation and remembered the Joes, who were awarded by Colton: Roadblock, Snake Eyes, Jinx, Flint, and Lady Jay. Colton presents Roadblock with an M1911 pistol that belonged to General George S. Patton, to be used when they find Cobra Commander. Roadblock proudly raises the weapon and fires a shot in honor of his fallen comrades, vowing to avenge them.

Box Office

G.I. Joe: Retaliation grossed $122.5 million in North America, $253.2 million internationally, and a $375.7 million worldwide total, on a budget of $130-$155 million.

In North America, the film grossed $10.5 million on its first day, debuting at the top of the box office. The film retained the no. 1 spot and grossed $40.5 million over the three-day weekend; However, the film’s opening weekend dropped 14.2% compared to The Rise of Cobra’s $54.7 million debut.
