Green Lantern 2011 – American Superhero (film)

Green Lantern

Green Lantern is a 2011 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins, Martin Campbell directed a script by Greg Berlanti and comic book writers Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, which was later rewritten by Michael Goldenberg. This is the first DC film since Catwoman (2004) not to involve a legendary film. The film tells the story of Hal Jordan, a test pilot who is selected to become the first human member of an intergalactic police force called the Green Lantern Corps; He is given a ring that grants him superpowers and must face Parallax, which threatens to upset the balance of power in the universe, when a new threat returns to Earth.

The film first entered development in 1997; Progress stalled until Berlanti was hired to write and direct in October 2007. Martin Campbell was brought on board in February 2009 after Berlanti was forced to step down as director. Most of the live-action actors were cast between July 2009 and February 2010, and filming took place in Louisiana from March to August 2010. The film was converted to 3D during its post-production phase.

Released

Green Lantern was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on June 17, 2011 to negative reviews, criticized for its script, tone, visual effects, and unfaithfulness to the source material. The film was one of the biggest box-office bombs in history, grossing $220 million against a production budget of $200 million. It was originally intended to start a film franchise based on DC characters. However, due to the film’s critical and commercial failure, Warner Bros. scrapped plans for a sequel, instead deciding to use Man of Steel (2013) as the official launch of the DC Extended Universe, two years after the release of Green Lantern.

Details

Billions of years ago, the Guardians of the Universe used the Green Essence of Will to create an intergalactic police force called the Green Lantern Corps. They divided the universe into 3,600 sectors, with one Green Lantern in each sector. One such Green Lantern, Aubin Sur of Sector 2814, defeats Parallax and imprisons him in the Lost Sector of the desolate planet Ryut. In the present day, Parallax escapes from his prison after being empowered by an encounter with crash survivors who accidentally fall into the dugout where Parallax is imprisoned on the abandoned planet. Parallax feeds off their fear to gain strength before chasing down and fatally wounding Abin Sur, who escapes and crashes on Earth where he orders his ring of powers to find a worthy successor.

Hal Jordan, an anxious test pilot working on a Ferris aircraft, is chosen by the Ring and taken to the crash site, where the dead Abin Sur assigns him a Green Lantern, telling him to take the lantern and swear an oath. Hal swears the oath and is taken to the Green Lantern Corps home planet OA, where he meets and trains veteran corps members Tomar-Re, Kilowog, and corps leader Sinestro, who believes he is incompetent and cowardly. Hal, frustrated by his extreme training sessions and Sinestro’s suspicions, returns to Earth with the Ring of Power and the Lantern.

Scientist Hector Hammond is summoned by his father, Senator Robert Hammond, to a secret government facility to perform an autopsy on Abin Sur’s body under the watchful eye of Amanda Waller. A fragment of parallax enters Hammond inside the corpse, giving him psychic powers at the cost of his health and sanity. After discovering that he was chosen for the undercover job solely because of his father’s influence and not his own abilities, Hammond uses the power of parallax to attempt to kill his father by telekinetically sabotaging his helicopter at a large party. Hal saves the senator and party guests, including his childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris.

The next night, Hal dresses up and goes to Carol Ferris’ house, but she immediately recognizes him after a closer look. Then they spend a peaceful time together. However, Carol is saddened after Hal leaves the Corps. Later, at the government facility, Hammond uses his telekinesis to successfully burn his father alive. Hammond also lifted Waller off the floor. As he falls, Hal arrives and saves the injured Waller by creating a pool of water that removes him from further danger. During the encounter, Hal telepathically connects with Hammond and learns of Parallax’s arrival on Earth before Hammond escapes.

On Oa, the Guardians tell Sinestro that Parallax is one of their fellow Guardians who tried to control the Yellow Essence of Fear, only to corrupt himself. Arguing that the only way to fight fear is through fear itself, Sinestro requests that the Guardians create a ring of the same yellow energy, preparing to concede Earth’s destruction to Parallax in order to protect Oa. Hal appears and tries to convince the Guardians that fear will corrupt the users if its power is used, but they reject his appeal and he returns to Earth to try to defeat Parallax himself.

Hal saves Carol from Hammond after a brief showdown. Parallax arrives, drains Hammond’s entire life force and then wreaks havoc on Coast City. After a terrible battle, Hal lures Parallax away from Earth to chase him across the solar system. Parallax is caught in the Sun’s gravitational pull and destroyed. Hal loses consciousness after the battle and falls towards the stars, but is saved by Sinestro, Kilowog, and Tomar-Ray.

The entire Green Lantern Corps congratulates Hal on his bravery. Sinestro tells Hal that he now bears the responsibility of protecting his sector as a Green Lantern. Hal and Carol spend one last time together and he tells her that he will be away for a while. The two share a kiss and Hal flies away.
In a mid-credits scene, Sinestro takes the yellow ring and places it on his finger, causing his green suit and eyes to turn yellow.

Cast and characters

Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan / Green Lantern:
Ferris is a test pilot for the Aircraft Company whose will to act qualifies him to be the first Earthling to be inducted into an intergalactic peacekeeping force powered by the green force of will. Reynolds said: “I’ve known about ‘Green Lantern’ all my life, but I’ve never followed it before. I fell in love with the character when I met Martin Campbell”. Reynolds called the film “an origin story to a certain degree, but it’s not a laborious origin story, where the movie starts in the third act. The movie starts when it starts. We find Hal is pretty much the first guy, and the adventure begins.” Chris Pine, Sam Worthington, Jon Hamm, Nathan Fillion (who voiced the character in the animated DC Comics project), Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake and Jared Leto were alternatively considered for the role, Brian Austin Green, a Green Lantern fan, campaigned for the part. Running time, but not auditioning in the end.
Gatlin Griffith portrays a young Jordan.
Blake Lively as Carol Ferris:
Vice President of Ferris Aircraft and Hal Jordan’s longtime love interest. A pseudonymous writer, citing unnamed sources, said Lively was among five leading contenders that included Eva Green, Keri Russell, Diane Kruger and Jennifer Garner. About her stunt work where she used stunt coordinator Gary Powell (Casino Royale, The Bourne Ultimatum, Quantum of Solace), gymnastic acrobats from Cirque du Soleil and aerial stunt rigs made for The Matrix, Lively explained: “Our director likes it real. — The fights are close and dirty… I’m 40 feet in the air, spinning around. It’s the best workout you can do because it’s all about the core… You do it for ten minutes and you see your body the next day! It’s so exhilarating, so exciting. -and nauseous”
Jenna Craig plays a young Ferris.
Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond:
A scientist who is exposed to the yellow energy of fear from Parallax, causing his brain to grow to a gigantic size and giving him psionic powers. Of his preparation for the role, Sarsgaard said: “I actually hung out with this biologist at Tulane who I think was the weirdest guy they could find. He was entertaining, and he and I actually worked on my speech that I gave. Green lantern”. Of her character, Sarsgaard commented that “she’s got shades of grey. It’s weirdness on top of angst”.
Kenan Caper plays a young Hammond.
Strong Mark as Thal Sinestro:
A Green Lantern and Hal Jordan’s mentor. Strong confirmed that the film follows the original story and that “the film closely follows the early comics. Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan’s mentor, somewhat suspicious and unsure of him because apparently Hal is the first man to create a Green Lantern. He’s definitely very strict. And Halke is uncertain about the wisdom of becoming a Green Lantern”. Strong said that the character is “a military guy but not immediately evil. He’s the kind of person who forces himself to be evil when writing comics, but initially he’s quite a heroic figure”. He also revealed that the character’s costume and other aspects of the character very closely follow the character’s early days: “That widow’s peak and thin mustache were based on David Niven for some reason… so I wanted to do justice to Sinestro as envisioned for the comic books. was done”
Angela Bassett as Amanda Waller:
A former congressional aide and government agent. Bassett said of the differences between the comic book and movie characters, “Well, I’m not 300 pounds”, but added that his character has “that intellectual, that brilliant, that no-nonsense, mean-business personality. Nothing stands between him and the trenches. don’t confuse”
Tim Robbins as Robert Hammond:
A United States senator and the father of the film’s human villain, Hector Hammond.
Temura Morrison as Abin Sur:
A Green Lantern who crash lands on Earth and recruits Hal Jordan as his replacement. Morrison said the prosthetic makeup for the character took four to five hours. Of filming with Ryan Reynolds, Morrison commented: “We did the whole scene together where I give him the ring, our suits are CGI so we had these gray suits so that was great and it was great to work with Martin Campbell again.”
Geoffrey Rush as Tomar-Ray:
A bird-beaked member of the Green Lantern Corps who teaches Hal Jordan to use his cosmic powers. Rush said he wasn’t familiar with Green Lantern at first but was drawn to the part after seeing the concept art: “When I got the offer for it I said, ‘Didn’t they make the movie?’ They said, ‘No, it’s a completely computer-generated character’. I looked at the artwork and said, I want to be that guy. Because I voiced an owl in Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hul. I was a pelican in Finding Nemo. voice and I thought I could improve on that now by being half-bird, half-fish, part-lizard. You can’t do that in a live-action film”. Rush compared the role to previous roles in which he played a mentor: “You could say I mentored Queen Elizabeth I as [Sir Francis] Walsingham, and [Leon] Trotsky mentored Frida Kahlo, and now your mentor is Hal Jordan. , and I was advising King George VI on The King’s Speech. But I can’t imagine your Ray setting up an office in Harley Street, London. They’re all very different people to me, but there’s a kind of theme I guess.”
Michael Clarke Duncan as Kellogg:
Of the character, a new recruit drill sergeant instructor for the Green Lantern Corps, Duncan, a fan of the comic books, said that “he’s a real tough guy who knows everything, and actually in a comic book he and Superman fought to a tie.”
Taika Waititi as Thomas Kolmaku:
An Inuit engineer at Ferris Aircraft. Waititi said he was cast after a Warner Bros. casting agent saw his performance in Boy, which he wrote and directed. Waititi—who has a Jewish mother and Maori father—said the production was “an opening for a role in a movie for somebody who’s not, I don’t know, white or black.”
Clancy Brown as Parallax:
A being composed of the yellow energy of fear, Parallax was captured by Abin Sur after entering the physical plane, possessing the body of a former guardian of the universe.
Additionally, John Tenney stars as Martin Jordan, Hal Jordan’s father; Jay O. Sanders portrays Carl Ferris, an aircraft designer and father of Carol Ferris; Mike Doyle played Jack Jordan, Hal Jordan’s older brother; And Nick Jundal was cast as Jim Jordan, Hal Jordan’s younger brother.
