Details

The Power Stone—one of the six Infinity Stones—intercepts a spaceship carrying the survivors of Asgard’s destruction—after Xander, Thanos, and his lieutenants—obtain the Power Stone from Ebony Maw, Cool Obsidian, Proxima Midnight, and Corvus Glaive. Thor retrieves the Space Stone from Thanos’ Tesseract, defeats the Hulk and kills Loki. Thanos also kills Heimdall after sending the Hulk to Earth using the Bifrost. Thanos and his lieutenants destroy the ship and leave.
The Hulk returns to Crash-land in the Sanctum Sanctorum of New York City, in the form of Bruce Banner. He warns Stephen Strange and Wong about Thanos’ plan to destroy half of all life in the universe, and they recruit Tony Stark. Mao and Obsidian arrive to retrieve the Time Stone from Strange, drawing the attention of Peter Parker. Mother, unable to take the Time Stone due to Strange’s enchantment, captures him. Stark and Parker hide aboard Maw’s spaceship while Wong Sactum stays behind to guard.

The Guardians of the Galaxy respond to the distress call of the Asgardian ship and rescue Thor. Thor surmises that Thanos is after the Reality Stone, which is in the Titans of Nowhere. Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax and Mantis travel to Nowhere, Thanos already has the Reality Stone. Thanos kidnaps Gamora, who reveals the location of the Soul Stone to save Nebula from torture. Vermir, the keeper of the stone, the Red Skull, tells Thanos that he can only achieve it by sacrificing someone he loves. Thanos sacrifices Gamora, earning the stone.
In Edinburgh, Midnight and Glaive attack Wanda Maximoff and Vision to retrieve the Mind Stone from Vision’s forehead. Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff and Sam Wilson rescue them and they take refuge with James Rhodes and Banner at the Avengers compound. Vision asks Wanda to destroy him and keep the Mind Stone from Thanos, but Wanda refuses. Rogers suggests they travel to Wakanda, which he believes has the resources to remove the stone without killing Vision.
Nebula escapes captivity and asks the remaining Guardians to meet her on Titan, Thanos’ ruined homeworld. Stark and Parker kill Mao and rescue Strange. The trio crash-land on Titan, where they meet Quill, Drax, and Mantis. Using the Time Stone, Strange sees millions of possible futures, only one in which the Avengers win. The team devises a plan to defeat Thanos and remove the Infinity Gauntlet, which he uses to safely house the Stones and run them. Thanos emerges, justifying his plan as necessary to guarantee the survival of an overpopulated universe. Nebula soon arrives and helps the others subdue Thanos, but then assumes Thanos killed Gamora. Enraged, Quill attacks Thanos, inadvertently allowing him to break the group’s hold and defeat them. Thanos mortally wounds Stark, but Strange offers the Time Stone in exchange for Stark’s life.
In Wakanda, Rogers reunites with Bucky Barnes before Thanos’ army invades. The Avengers, along with T’Challa and Wakandan forces, mount a defense while Shuri works to extract the Mind Stone from sight. Unable to summon the Hulk after losing to Thanos, Banner fights in Stark’s Hulkbuster armor. Thor, Rocket and Groot arrive to reinforce the Avengers. Together they kill Midnight, Obsidian and Glaive and defeat Thanos’ army. Shuri is unable to complete the extraction before Thanos himself arrives, briefly slowed by Banner, Rogers, T’Challa, Wilson, Rhodes, Barnes, Okoye, Romanoff, and Groot. Vision convinces a reluctant Wanda to destroy him and the Mind Stone, but Thanos uses the Time Stone to reverse his actions, ripping the stone from Vision’s forehead and completing the gauntlet. Although Thor mortally wounds Thanos with Stormbreaker, Thanos activates the full gauntlet by snapping his fingers before teleporting away.
Half of all life in the universe is separated, including Burns, T’Challa, Groot, Wanda, Wilson, Mantis, Drax, Quill, Strange, Parker, Maria Hill, and Nick Fury, the last of whom sends an emergency signal to an altered pager before disintegrating. Meanwhile, Thanos is watching the sunrise on a distant planet.

Cast And Characters

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man:
Benefactor of the Avengers who is a self-described genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist with a self-made electromechanical suit of armor. Co-director Joe Russo explained that Stark is “getting closer to this larger threat, so he’s doing everything in his power to keep Earth safe”. Downey added that Stark has smaller goals than in previous films.
Chris Hemsworth as Thor:
An Avenger and King of Asgard based on the Norse mythological god of the same name. Joe Russo said that Thor’s story begins after the events of Thor: Ragnarok (2017), which finds him in a “very deep”, “very interesting place” with “real emotional motivation”. At Hemsworth’s recommendation, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely consulted with Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi and screenwriter Eric Pearson to help carry over Thor’s comedic and tragic elements, re-toned from that film. Joe Russo said that Thor “has the film’s driving hero arc that directly contradicts Thanos’ logic” and that if Thor had killed Thanos, he would have been the main hero of the film.
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk:
A vengeful and talented scientist who transforms into a monster when exposed to gamma radiation, usually when angry or excited. Banner spends the film trying to reunite with the Avengers and “impress everyone on how dangerous Thanos is”. Joe Russo felt that the Hulk refused to appear for most of the film only partly because he was scared, but he realized that “Banner just wanted the Hulk to fight. I think he had enough to save Banner’s ass”. Russo added that this was a reflection of the departure from “Ragnarok […] [where] these two characters are constantly in conflict with each other for control”. Banner’s appearance in the film continues a story arc for the character established in Thor: Ragnarok and culminates in Avengers: Endgame, in which the Hulk and Banner “start to blur a bit”. Ruffalo described the Hulk in Infinity War as having the mental powers of a five-year-old.
Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America:
Fugitive leader of the Avengers’ non-regulation group. A World War II veteran, he is elevated to peak human physicality by an experimental serum and frozen in suspended animation before waking up in the modern world. According to Joe Russo after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016), Rogers struggles with the conflict between his responsibilities to himself and to others. The character embodies the “soul” of the comic book identity Nomad in the film, and receives new vibranium gauntlets from Shuri to replace his old shield. An early draft of the film had Rogers appearing at the end of the first film to save Vision from Wakanda’s Corvus Glaive. Marcus and McFeely were called “insane” to have waited so long to introduce Rogers in the film, and eventually admitted that it was not “[a] satisfactory” approach.
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow:
A highly trained spy, Rogers is a member of the group of Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. Its former agent. Johansson said that Romanoff’s situation following Captain America: Civil War has been “a dark time. I wouldn’t say my character has been particularly hopeful, but I think she’s probably toughened up more than before.”
Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange:
A former neurosurgeon who, after a car accident that leads to a journey of healing, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions and becomes a master of the mystical arts. Marcus and McFeely describe Strange as “a reasonable adult in the room” as having a “broad perspective available”. Julian “JFunk” Daniels once again assists Cumberbatch with his finger-tooting movements.
Don Cheadle as James “Rhode” Rhodes / War Machine:
A US Air Force officer and Avenger who operates War Machine Armor. After his paralysis during the events of Civil War, Rhodes is given a device by Stark to walk again, although he is reluctant to give up his War Machine armor and rejoin the Avengers due to his injuries. Cheadle believed that Rhodes was “discussing this reunion and his rejoining this team”. He also explained that Rhodes’ relationship with Stark has “deepened” since his accident, saying, “I think Tony feels a little bit responsible and guilty. But then again, he always has my back in a way that only he really can”.
Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man:
A teenager, the Avengers and Stark’s pledge who gained spider-like powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Downey helped coach Holland through his death scene, which was not drawn into the script.
Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther:
The king of the African nation of Wakanda who gained his increased strength by consuming a heart-shaped herb. Boseman, along with other actors in Black Panther (2018) as Wakandans, improvised their war songs before the battle of Wakanda. Despite filming both Black Panther and Infinity War at the same time, Russo was unaware of the spells, as they had not yet seen footage from Black Panther and felt the moment was “incredibly cool”.
Paul Bettany as Vision:
An android and Avenger created using artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S., Ultron, and the Mind Stone. Anthony Russo called the Vision “a living MacGuffin”; His life is in direct conflict with Thanos’s quest, which “lifts the bond”.
Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff: A member of Rogers’ team of Avengers who can use magic and engage in hypnosis and telekinesis.
Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Falcon: A member of Rogers’ team in the Avengers and a former parachutist trained by the military in aerial combat using a specially designed wing pack.
Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier:
A raised soldier and Rogers’ ally and best friend who reemerges as a brainwashed assassin after being presumed killed in action during World War II. Barnes, formerly known as the Winter Soldier, was named White Wolf by the people of Wakanda, who helped remove his Hydra programming.
Tom Hiddleston as Loki:
Thor’s adopted brother, based on the Norse mythological god of the same name. Hiddleston knew about Loki’s death in Infinity War after meeting Russo in May 2016 with Thor: Ragnarok, his death being the first scene in the film that Russo conceived. Hiddleston’s knowledge of Loki’s fate in Infinity War influenced his portrayal in Ragnarok. In Loki’s final moments, Hiddleston believed it was “very powerful” that Loki called himself “Odinson”, as it was a moment that “capped Loki’s whole journey”, while his death “takes a dramatic turn”, establishing the threat. of Thanos
Idris Elba as Heimdall: An all-seeing, all-hearing Asgardian and former sentry of the Bifrost Bridge, based on the Norse mythological god of the same name.
Peter Dinklage as Itri: King of the dwarves of Nidavellir, and weapons maker based on the Norse mythological dwarf of the same name.
Benedict Wong as Wong: A master of the arcane arts, tasked with protecting some of Kamar-Taj’s most valuable relics and books.
Pom Klementieff as Mantis: A member of the Guardians with empathic powers.
Karen Gillan as Nebula: An adopted daughter of Thanos who grew up with Gamora as siblings.
Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer:
A member of the Guardians and Warriors seeking revenge against Thanos for killing his family. At the end of each day of filming, Bautista had to sit in a sauna to remove her makeup.
Zoe Saldana as Gamora: A member of the Guardians who is an orphan from an alien world and subsequently raised by Thanos, and seeking redemption for her past crimes. Ariana Greenblatt plays a young Gamora.
Vin Diesel as Groot:
A member of the Guardians who is as human as a tree. Executive producer James Gunn explained that Groot is still a teenager in the film, a growth similar to that seen in one of the post-credits scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). Terry Notary provided motion capture for Groot and said the character is “coming of age, so you’ll see the teenager find a mentor and model himself”.
Bradley Cooper as Rocket:
A member of the Guardians who is a genetically-engineered raccoon-based bounty hunter, mercenary, and master of weapons and combat tactics. Sean Gunn was again a stand-in for Rocket during filming, with his acting and expressions serving as a pacing reference for the character.
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Pot:
Stark’s fiancee and CEO of Stark Industries. Downey felt that “Pepper remains the heart of the [Iron Man] story”, which was not the focus of some of the previous films with Stark. Downey continued that “we wanted to go back to that reality. Not just for them, but let’s see how it can all be worth fighting for.”
Benicio del Toro as Tennelly’s Tivan / The Collector: One of the Elders of the Universe who is the obsessive keeper of the largest collection of interstellar creatures, relics and species of all kinds in the galaxy.
Josh Brolin as Thanos:
An intergalactic warlord on Titan who seeks the six Infinity Stones to destroy half of all life in order to “rebalance the universe”. Producer Kevin Feige added that Thanos believed the universe was becoming overpopulated, which led to the destruction of his home moon Titan and something he vowed not to let happen again, adding that “You could almost go as far as to say, He is the main character in the film. McFeely shared this sentiment, describing the film as his “hero’s journey” in addition to being the film’s protagonist, saying, “It’s the part that [means] the most to him. We wanted to show that. It wasn’t. Just power; It wasn’t just an ideal, it was human”. Brolin compared Thanos to “the Quasimodo of this time” and that the novel, since Thanos was born deformed and considered a “little” on Titan, helped to “emotionalize the whole thing”. Brolin also added that he preferred playing Thanos over Cable in Deadpool 2 (2018) because of the amount of work that went into creating the character. Thanos does not wear armor for most of the film, which he collects the Infinity Stones to symbolize his growing powers. In addition to providing the voice for the character, Brolin did motion capture on set.
Chris Pratt as Peter Quill / Star-Lord:
The half-human, half-celestial leader of the Guardians who was abducted from Earth as a child and raised by a group of alien thieves and smugglers. Pratt described her role in the film as a “guest star” appearance and said “you can be a little more animated; a little more absurd; a little more colorful if you want it to be”.
Additionally, several other actors reprise their MCU roles: Danai Gurira as Okoye, the head of the Dora Milage; Letitia Wright as Shuri, T’Challa’s sister; Carey Condon as the voice of Stark’s AI F.R.I.D.A.Y.; Florence Kasumba as Ayo, a member of the Dora Milage; Jacob Batalon as Parker’s friend Ned; Isabella Amara as Parker’s classmate Sally; Tiffany Espensen as Parker’s classmate Cindy; and Ethan Dijon as Parker’s classmate Tiny. Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders make uncredited cameos in the film’s post-credits scenes as Nick Fury and Maria Hill, former director and deputy director of S.H.I.E.L.D., respectively.
Thanos’ henchmen, known as the Black Order in the comics and the “Children of Thanos” in the film, star Terry Notary as Cool Obsidian, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Ebony Mao, Carrie Coon as Proxima Midnight, and Michael James Shaw as Corvus Glaive. The four provide on-set voice and motion-capture performances for their characters. Because Coon was pregnant during filming, she mainly did facial capture for Proxima Midnight with some motion-capture,[81] with stuntwoman Monique Ganderton providing the rest of the stand-up and set. Ebony Maw’s appearance was inspired by the Marvel Comics character Mephisto, who appeared in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline.
Ross Marquand voices Johann Schmidt / Red Skull, the “Stonekeeper” and former Nazi commander of Hydra during World War II. Marquand replaces Hugo Weaving, who was reluctant to reprise the character from Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). The Red Skull was created through CGI and portrayed by stand-ins on set. Avengers co-creator Stan Lee has a cameo as Parker’s school bus driver, while screenwriter Stephen McFeely has a cameo as Secretary Ross’ aide. Kenneth Branagh, director of Thor (2011), voices an Asgardian distress caller in an uncredited cameo. David Cross was invited to play a small role as Tobias Funk, his character from the television sitcom Arrested Development, on which the Russo brothers had previously worked; This was prevented by a scheduling conflict, but Fünke still appears in the film as a specimen in the collector’s collection, played by an unexpected extra. Executive producer Jon Favreau would reprise his role as Happy Hogan, while co-director Joe Russo had a cameo as a paparazzi photographer, but the scene did not make the film’s theatrical cut.
